Troubleshooting

How to stop IPTV buffering

Buffering has a handful of causes, and you can rule most of them out in a few minutes. Work through the fixes in this order. The early ones are the quickest and solve the most cases.

First, find out what kind of buffering you have

Before changing anything, answer one question: does every channel buffer, or only one or two?

  • Only one channel: the issue is probably that channel’s source. Try it again in ten minutes, and tell support if it stays down.
  • Every channel, all the time: look at your device and connection (fixes 1 to 6).
  • Every channel, but only in the evening: your internet provider’s network is busy at peak time (fixes 4 to 9).

1. Restart the app, then the device

Player apps hold a lot in memory, especially after hours of channel surfing. Close the app fully, restart the device, then open the app again.

  • Firestick: hold Select and Play/Pause together for five seconds.
  • Android TV: Settings → Device preferences → About → Restart.
  • Smart TVs: unplug the TV for 30 seconds. Turning it off with the remote usually only puts it to sleep.

2. Restart your router

Routers run for months without a reboot and slowly get worse. Unplug the router for 30 seconds, plug it back in, and give it two minutes before testing again.

3. Clear the player app’s cache

On Android-based devices (Firestick, Android TV, Google TV) go to Settings → Applications → Manage installed applications → [your player] → Clear cache. Do not clear data unless you are ready to sign in again.

4. Get off weak Wi-Fi

This is the fix that matters most. Live TV needs a steady connection, not just a fast one, and Wi-Fi drops packets when walls, microwaves or the neighbours’ networks get in the way.

  • Best: an Ethernet cable. Firesticks need an inexpensive Ethernet adapter. Most Android TV boxes and Smart TVs have a port built in.
  • Good: 5 GHz Wi-Fi, with the router in the same room or one wall away.
  • Avoid: 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi through several walls, or cheap Wi-Fi extenders.

5. Check your speed on the device itself

Run a speed test on the TV device, not on your phone. Your phone may sit next to the router while the Firestick sits behind the TV. On a Firestick, install a speed-test app from the Appstore.

As a rule of thumb you need around 10 Mbps for HD, 20 Mbps for Full HD and 25 Mbps or more for 4K, per screen, and more if others in the house are streaming or gaming. We explain the numbers in what internet speed you need for IPTV.

6. Lower the stream quality for a moment

If the channel offers an HD or SD version, switch to it during a big game. A slightly softer picture that never freezes beats a sharp one that stops every two minutes.

7. Increase the player’s buffer size

Some players let you set a buffer. In IPTV Smarters Pro, look under Settings → Player settings; in TiviMate under Settings → Playback. A medium or large buffer smooths out short dips in the connection. It adds a few seconds of delay but cuts freezes.

8. Try a different player app

Some players handle certain devices better than others. If buffering continues on one app, install a second player, sign in with the same details and compare. Our comparison of the best IPTV player apps lists the ones worth trying.

9. Change DNS, or test without your VPN

  • DNS: switching the router or device to a public DNS (such as 1.1.1.1 or 8.8.8.8) can speed up how quickly streams start.
  • VPN: a VPN adds a hop between you and the stream. If you use one, turn it off briefly to test. If the picture improves, choose a closer VPN server.

When to contact support

If you have tried a wired connection and a restart, and several channels still buffer at different times of day, contact Gamma IPTV support with:

  1. Your device and player app
  2. The channels affected, with the times
  3. A speed-test result taken on the device

That information lets us check the right thing first instead of asking you to repeat steps you have already done.

Setting up for the first time? Start with the setup guide for your device. Most setups are smooth from day one when the device is wired in.

Frequently asked questions

Why does IPTV buffer only in the evening?

Between roughly 7pm and 11pm, more homes in your area are streaming, so your provider’s network is busier. A wired connection and a medium buffer setting in your player usually smooth this out.

Will a VPN stop IPTV buffering?

Only if your internet provider is slowing down video traffic. In most homes a VPN adds a hop and makes buffering slightly worse, so test with it switched off first.

Is buffering caused by the Firestick itself?

Older or nearly-full Firesticks can struggle. Clear the player cache, remove apps you do not use and restart the stick; if it still freezes on a wired connection, the device may be the bottleneck.
